wow..that was a lot of people

So I set a new yoga record for myself and from what I understand perhaps a new lululemon record at the Briar Hill and Yonge Location.

I led a vinyasa class on Nov 18 and had 41 people attend!!

Even though by now I am far more comfortable teaching small to mid size classes..I must admit that I was quite nervous as I started the class, but that quickly faded.

One of the many things that I love and appreciate about teaching yoga is that I find that I get “in the zone” quite often.

For you yogis out there, it seems that as soon as my “yoga teacher”
concentration kicks in (it doesn’t always happen).. I enter the realms of pratyahara and Dharana. All my nerves, fears and random thoughts evaporate and I become so focused on and connected to what I am doing/teaching at the moment.

The components of FLOW as per Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi seem to be the best way to describe this

1. Clear goals (expectations and rules are discernible and goals are attainable and align appropriately with one’s skill set and abilities).
2. Concentrating and focusing, a high degree of concentration on a limited field (a person engaged in the activity will have the opportunity to focus and to delve deeply into it).
3. A loss of the feeling of self-consciousness, the merging of action and awareness.
4. Distorted sense of time, one’s subjective experience of time is altered.
5. Direct and immediate feedback (successes and failures in the course of the activity are apparent, so that behavior can be adjusted as needed).
6. Balance between ability level and challenge (the activity is neither too easy nor too difficult).
7. A sense of personal control over the situation or activity.
8. The activity is intrinsically rewarding, so there is an effortlessness of action.
9. People become absorbed in their activity, and focus of awareness is
narrowed down to the activity itself, action awareness merging

(Csikszentmihalyi, 1975. p.72).

So speaking of FLOW and YOGA..

meditation retreat funnies and vinyasa yoga classes

Man, I crack me up sometimes! Although most people don’t find my jokes that funny, they will mostly admit that in the least,  *I* totally get a kick out of them!

I was meaning to journal this little joke/experience that took place at the end of my last meditation retreat but somehow never got around to it.  So, for some reason or other it popped into my head today so here it goes…

So there we were… a small group of us meditators freshly out of noble silence beginning our noble chattering when the topic of Dharma Names came up.  We were going around the group sharing our Dharma names or talking about friends of ours that have them.

After hearing about a few names one of the meditators mentioned that his friend was given a Dharma name that sounded something like Harivana, Hapivana?  which meant RAPID ENLIGHTENMENT.

So, I turned to him and looked him in the eyes and said…

“Hmm.. I guess that means he’s going NOWHERE FAST?”

I probably had a grin from ear to ear, just on the verge of laughing my no longer noble ass off when I looked around and saw everyone just blankly staring at me.  So I quietly chuckled and told myself to save that one for later.

Come to think of it.. I should make a t-shirt up.

Picture this..

a fat buddha in a convertible porsche with a big smile and a caption that says..

Ohhh.. so funny and yet so true on soooo many different levels!!

Ok..and on to the next topic..

I’m teaching at a new yoga studio that my friend Heather just opened up called YOGA QUEEN.  It’s a wonderful small yoga studio in the heart of Parkdale.

I love her approach to yoga as it is truly based on working within and giving back to the community.  She is offering some really fun and unique classes and workshops.  Plus, yours truly,  will be teaching a six week Ashtanga FUN-damentals workshop in January.. I’ll be sure to post more on that later.

here are the details.. please come out and support me and the new studio this SUNDAY NOV 18th @ 11am for my first class there!!!!

Oh and I’m also teaching a free community class at LULULEMON Yonge and Briar Hill that same SUNDAY NOV 18th at 6:30pm
